1. The side hug
This is for busy people on the run or two girls with big bosoms or people who are shy of the full frontal hug.

Also good if your friend is a bit bigger than you |
2. The quick squeeze
A one-squeeze hug from the front. Slightly more involved than the side hug but still good for busy bodies.

"Let's make it quick before someone runs us over" |
3. The back-patters hug
This one is good for people who don't like to squeeze or press against someone. You can still indicate your affection by patting them lightly on the back as you hug. Pat harder if you want the hug to end.
4. The regular hug
This is your basic, usually most common type of hug. It involves pressing your chests together for a few seconds with your arms around each other.
5. The lift-me-up hug
This one is for people of considerable height difference, or if you just want to show your friend that you are strong enough to lift them.
6. The spin around hug
Following on from lift-me-up, this is a celebratory hug where one person lifts the other and spins them around. Good for reunited friends or congratulations.

I didn't want too many couply photos but this one was so sweet that I couldn't resist |
7. The pile on
Good for sleepovers or at sports events, this one targets one person and at least two other people pile on top of the first person. The more people the better.
8. The 360 hug
Like the pile on, this is a group activity. One person is the hugee and other people hug them from all angles.
9. The never let me go
This one is a front hug that is held for longer than a few seconds. Definitively involves pressing close. Evokes sounds similar to those made when you sink into a warm bath or after a sip of homemade hot chocolate.
10. The smother hug
This is similar to the never let me go hug, only it involves a tighter grip. Usually if the hugger is afraid for the huggee or has really missed them.
11. The clingy hug
This one is where one person pulls away from the hug and the other person holds on even tighter. Great with friends. Awkward if you actually don't want to hug them.
12. The hug from behind
Contrary to popular belief, this style of 'spooning' hug is not reserved for couples. It can be good if your friend is sitting at a computer or is in the middle of talking to friends and has their back to you. Maybe you'll startle them, but just laugh and give them a big sloppy kiss on the ear and it'll be all better.
13. The jump and hug
This one may require a run up. It's good if you haven't seen them for a while or if you are naturally boisterous or want to test the strength of your friend. For couples, the girl might jump and wrap her legs around the guy's waist. For friends, it's more likely to be jumping and clinging on with your arms around their neck. Of course, you're welcome to be creative.
14. The tackle hug
Self explanatory.
15. The snuggle hug
This is a hug that works well when you're curled up in blankets. Good for warming you up.
No matter what hug you choose, the most important thing is that you share it with someone you care about.
